generalizing the view types currently covered in shelves and allowing for splitting "N" number of times would make this insanely flexible, and manageable. Allowing users to intermingle shelves and filesystem views would be really an amazing feature.
i second this, and actually just sent out an e.mail at 4am about this one. 3D applications use this approach and it's highly useful to have 3 "views" side by side into different aspects of the filesystem.
Splitting horizontal and vertically are key. This might allow the view types that shelves currently cover but generalized so that any type of browser or shelf might be used anwhere in the UI
this is one of the primary reasons i turned to Path Finder orginally. Order queue would be very helpful indeed.
