Hear, hear. Like Jay, I'm still running Windows packages (notably ZTreeWin, the world's best file manager) under VMFusion to get functionality that I'm astonished to find missing in the Mac world.

This feature goes hand-in-hand with merging of two folders during copy/move operations.
This is one of those small features which make a big difference to file operations. (I hate to say, but this feature has become standard in the Windows world!.... How is it possible Mac doesn't have some of the basic features of Windows???)
For this reason, I still use windows-explorer (in Parallels) while copying/merging folders, to avoid the costly mistake of over-writing new files with old ones. It's a terrible solution, but necessary...

I add my voice to the request list to compare and display file size and date information (besides file name) to the user in file and folder management operations.
That is, if I am about to overwrite same-named files, please show me the details!
Do not act like the Mac Finder which just states/asks if I wish to overwrite something - but fails to help by providing any detail at all.
When this happens in Finder, I have to stop, display both windows, visually compare lists, then copy or move files one-by-one so that I get desired results without accidentally destroying files. It's a real pain and one of the lamest aspects of Apple Mac Finder file management. (should be perhaps called file non-management... ;) )
Thank you. -

simple but very effective feature

That could have extra options in the preferences for it, like:
-overwrite automatically if newer (without confirmation)
-filename changing to add "_new" or "_old" BEFORE the extension when there is one. The text for "_new" "_old" should editable from the Settings, for example you might want the date of the file creation instead.

another option would be to (auto)rename files on request if file names clash (kind of versioning)

This makes a lot of sense. It would make Pathfinder better than the finder because its information is always so minimal that you don't dare to replace files, fearing you are replacing the wrong one. I support it.
