I suggest you ...

Fully replace the Finder

Make the trash in the dock work in Path Finder. At the moment I need to have the Finder open as well just to use the trash in the Dock.

Replace the Finder in the Dock. I just can't be doing with the Finder sitting there taking up valuable Dock space when I don't even use it.

This feature is likely to be perpetually “planned” as the Finder is so deeply embedded into the operating system.

To remove the Finder icon from the dock and application switcher:
    1. Path Finder > Finder > Enable Finder’s “Remove from Dock”
    2. Right-click on the Finder dock icon and select “Remove from Dock.” This works even while the Finder is running, allowing it to run silently in the background.

The dock’s trash can is hard-coded to use the Finder, so there’s nothing we can do about it.

I agree that I'd like this, but I'd also like to add that if you're going to put in hooks that deep into the OS, be sure to provide a way to put everything back again. For example, after I uninstalled PathFinder5 after its trial period was up, other applications kept trying to use it as a file browser because it was still registered with LaunchServices as the default. If you're going to completely replace Finder, be sure that your uninstaller completely un-replaces it as well.

My concern with this is Back to my Mac sharing .. I actually use this often .. and it's not available as a list in path finder.

Also add "Favourite Servers" like in Finder (cmd+k) - it's really annoying to remember/type IP addresses etc.

The dock can't be modified beyond adding/removing applications and folders. The trash can is locked in place, and any behavior associated with clicking a dock item is defined by the dock itself. We unfortunately can't change it's behavior without hacking/rewriting core OS components.

The common suggestion is for us to replace the dock entirely, but the dock is much more than an application launcher - it manages the command-tab application switcher, Exposé, Spaces, and so on, functionality that we couldn't reasonably reproduce.

I don't want to sound stupid, but isn't it possible to remove the trash can, since it's hard-coded with for Finder only and useless, and replace it with Path Finder's one? Or is it so that Finder's trash can is hard-coded to stay in the dock also?

I have some folders in the dock I often use, but they open in Finder. Great if this could be fixed. ;)

around 3 month ago i tried pathfinder as a complete replacement for finder and was very happy except the lousy way pathfinder handles the icons on the desktop (Case 3854). OSX is so much better than windows but its icon handling features are absolutely awkward. every windos box can specify the space between icons horiz. and vertical indepenently, the icon size and of course: icons will automatically allign to hat grid. my experience was that icons will be stacked over another, the grid is very inflexible (changes iconsize also) ... its like a timetravel to windows95 ...
i'm waiting every day to hear about this is fixed in pathfinder because then i will instantly replace Finder as my desktop.

I also actually like the fact that the finder's desktop is sitting there in the background with the "reveal desktop" Exposé function.

It allows me to keep a clean desktop in Pathfinder, set with smaller icons and no file names visible. Then if I've dumped a bunch of stuff on my desktop—it stays fairly clean with the Pathfinder view and I can activate the Exposé and see the finder's view showing all the names, file info, and icon size.

I'm happy to have the Finder out of the dock, but as a designer, I had already found a livable solution: I changed the finder icon to be only be the "left" face... slid all the way over to the right within the icon footprint, and then changed Pathfinder's icon to be only the "right" face, slid all the way to the left. So my dock is minimally changed from normal. It basically looks like my finder icon was split in half. Conceptually, it works too, as I still use the finder quite a bit—so they're "working together".

It would really perfect is PathFinder could completely replace Finder. To do so, it should also support the same AppleScript commands as Finder does.

I hate that too - if that can be fixed, then PathFinder will be one the most useful apps I use.

I really hate that Expose removes the Path Finder desktop and reveals the (blank) finder desktop. If this was fixed, Path Finder would be my hero.
