How would you use this feature? Please respond in the comments.

Before I switched to osx I used Directory Opus http://www.gpsoft.com.au/ which has a great sync and compare function. I used it a lot for quickly breaking out projects to a laptop for working away from home. (Also various sundry splitting/merging/housekeeping tasks.) Seeing how useful sync was in DOpus (a windows explorer replacement) I can see the is as a good fit for Pathfinder.

Hi,
I would like to syncing in multiple ways:
* auto compare and sync when I connect my macbook to the network, and a certain network device is found (e.g. NAS)
* manual compare and sync at a certain command for a folder you can chooseThe syncing would ideally be done to multiple devices via ftp, network, ...
Currently I'm using multiple other tools for this. Having all features in path finder would give me a reason to finally switch to path finder and make it a killer app.

I've seen two great sync features:
1) Transmit FTP client for Mac has:
- select direction (to server or from server)
- optionally add some advanced rules (exclude some files etc.)2) WinSCP for Windows
- continuously checks for modified files and immediately uploads them to serverOf course, this feature needs not be limited to "remote" folders.

Compare and Sync is needed and would be a killer feature!
Comparing files between my iMac and my MacBookPro's project folders and then be able what to sync, based on size and date, sync labels and meta data of folders etc etc
Also to be able to compare and sync files over the internet. (one direction, or both)
I use match.app which has great options and also has the ability to save lists with folders to sync.
We •need• this in PF it will be a winner feature!!! -

Sync from one computer to the other is something I am missing as well. I use a NAS as backup for all my important files, and need the synch feature to maintain the files on the NAS up to date with the files on my computer. Currently I am using the application ChronoSync for this, but it would be nice to have this feature incorporated into Pathfinder.

Thank you for providing this useful tool to allow your users to provide you with feedback. Kudos.
I would love this feature. Today I have to use other tools to keep folders in sync, and it just makes sense that PF would have the functionality as it deals with files and folders as its main reason for being. I would need it to work manually and automatically: I would set up some folders to always be in sync every time a change is made in the source folder; yet other times I would want to do a one-off, so manual mode would be welcome.
Keep up the great work guys. -

There is an app in App Store called Folder Sync ... That is what I would love to see as a feature in Path Finder. I need to compare and synchronize folders across 2 computers, but need manual control which file I decide to overwrite after finding the files that differ. If this worked over the entire tree (subfolders, as an option to switch on/off) that would be superb! Thanks for the most useful app I ever used, by the way!

@Richard Dragon: I agree with your premise, but you might be slightly out of topic in this thread. Check out these other ones:
For directory comparison across panes: http://feedback.cocoatech.com/forums/275-general/suggestions/39459-add-tools-to-compare-select-files-in-dual-pane-to-
For file comparison across panes: http://feedback.cocoatech.com/forums/275-general/suggestions/2593890-allow-comparing-file-content-diff-across-dual-brThere's a python-based tool called Meld, which does both of these well, but it's not a file manager.

I think people should keep in mind that comparison and sync are 2 *DIFFERENT* operations. Sync is fine for some things, but there are many times I want to do a comparison, and decide on my own whether to copy files from one side to the other.
This is why I find the "sync to" option in ForkLift to be a major pain in the a**. If ALL you want to do is sync, then it's fine. But for example, right now I have two directories with over 300 files in each. I don't want to sync them... but I DO want to find out what the differences are, and copy a few of the files that differ from one of them to the other.
Forklift's sync window does not allow for bulk marking/unmarking of files. Or if it does, I haven't figured it out. So it's great for SYNCING, if that's all you want to do. But syncing is only a subset of the functionality made possible by comparing two directories. It would be a shame to put in most of that functionality, then fall short.
A good look at how this is done can be found in muCommander, which is still (so far) my favorite 2-pane file manager, next to the old defunct Norton Commander, which was awesome. I used Norton Commander, including an "experimental" Windows version, for probably 15 years or more. I never switched away from it until I switched to OS X.
I am still looking for a truly adequate replacement. Some (ForkLift, Path Finder) do some newer things and do them well. Others (muCommander) do old things very well, but lack some of the modern features. I have yet to see anything that has the best of both worlds.
I did not include TotalCommander here, because while it does lots of things, in my opinion it does few of them very well. I had it for a time, but I didn't have to spend much time with it before it got round-filed.
I know you Path Finder folks have heard this before, but it's the simple truth: if you could add ftp functionality similar to that in ForkLift, you would have a game-changer, because so many other features of Path Finder are superior.
And full directory compare, not just sync. My experience with Path Finder has been short, but so far I haven't even figured out how to connect to an ftp server (other than bonjour sftp), much less compare directories or sync.

To do backup of entire folders to a external drive or on a remote server.

I often work locally on files which are otherwise stored on a remote server (to increase speed). I have then to ensure that folders are in sync, since there are quite a few calculations which require the server (power, ram, HDD speed, etc.)
So far I rely on rsync. Having Path Finder do the job for me when I ask it to do so would be a big plus! -

I like the solution from Total Commander:

this would be a great addition -

When working on projects for clients, and sometimes needing to transfer data to external drives (USB / Network etc) the ability to always simply contact the device and have a "Sync" Function would save huge amounts of time.
I can think of 2 ways id like to see this implemented:
1. Sync contact of left window in Pathfinder to the current right one (Source to Target)
2. Being able to save the Sync Preferences (source, target, etc) with a name, e.g. "Sync all files of customer ABC" So if i have a place where all the customers files are stored i can simply connect a drive (or to remote server of course) and path finder would know which files need to be synced and i only have to tell him where to.I do realize that other programs can accomplish this. But wouldn't this be another good way to keep people using the path finder more if they didn't have to rely on yet another app?

Synching two folders is one of the reasons to buy a file manager app for.
E.g. to copy videos to an external harddrive etc. -

like Total Commander does. Customizable presets like in arRsync would be lovely.

I've been looking for something like SpeedCopy (or the one I used back in the day, Connectix's SpeedDoubler and the SmartCopy part of the utility) for many years; something like ChronoSync is both overkill and far more complex than what I'm looking for.
What I want (at least from a UI standpoint) is just a simple improvement to the copy functionality; Copy a folder to a location, and if a folder with the same name exists, offer to replace, merge, or Smart Replace.
(Smart Replace = copy just the changed files, and is the option I want more than anything else. The key use case for me is when I travel, I carry a portable drive with all my audio/video media with me, some 800+ gig copied from my desktop iTunes. Right now, to update that drive, I have to either dump the entire iTunes folder and spend hours waiting for it to copy, or go through and update the folders manually. Being able to just drag-copy and have it add new files and update changed files would be an incredible timesaver.)

Anyone remember SpeedCopy from pre Mac OSX days. That was clean and and fast. I used to love how I could drag a folder to the same place an another folder and it would offer to merge, replace or, sync. Just slick.
