Welcome to the Path Finder feature request page! We’re going to try this out for a while as an experiment to help us figure out what features we should be working on. Submit your ideas, vote on existing feature requests, and let us know what you think!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the “My feedback” filter and select “My open ideas”.

It may be possible for us to implement folder merging on Lion since this appears to have been added to OS X’s file copy API.

        • Fully replace the Finder

Make the trash in the dock work in Path Finder. At the moment I need to have the Finder open as well just to use the trash in the Dock.

Replace the Finder in the Dock. I just can't be doing with the Finder sitting there taking up valuable Dock space when I don't even use it.

planned  ·  MichaelAdminMichael (Admin, Path Finder) responded

This feature is likely to be perpetually “planned” as the Finder is so deeply embedded into the operating system.

To remove the Finder icon from the dock and application switcher:
            1. Path Finder > Finder > Enable Finder’s “Remove from Dock”
            2. Right-click on the Finder dock icon and select “Remove from Dock.” This works even while the Finder is running, allowing it to run silently in the background.

The dock’s trash can is hard-coded to use the Finder, so there’s nothing we can do about it.

Writable FTP support will be a tremendous amount of work, but we’d love to add it to a future Path Finder upgrade.

              • Dual pane - one click copy/move

Hi - have a look at Total Commander in the Win World: When I click copy in the top menu bar it just copies from one pane to the other.

                • Handle archives like regular folders

Just like in Windows: list contents, traverse directories, extract/copy/move selected files, move files and folders in and out.

The technology is already in place (stuffit), but I doubt a simple plugin would do it - this feature is up to Cocoatech to implement.

It has been possible in Windows for years, but somehow has not been done on Mac (i guess Finder integration is a bitch). Well, PathFinder is the next best (better) option.

Go ahead, make any archive act like a regular folder in PathFinder!

                  • Make the path navigator text-editable

PF shows the current path in the path navigator with each segment as buttons so you can jump to a directory in the path. What I'd like to see is more of a "URL bar". Basically allowing a "Go to folder" feature. I like how Vista's Explorer has implemented this: it shows the buttons like PF does, but if you click on an special icon the bar turns into a text-field where you can type the path specifically.

                      • Provide a "PathFinder as Desktop" mode

Setting "PathFinder as Desktop" literally makes the PathFinder window the desktop. It lives in the background but that is no problem with Expose desktop view.

Let us know your thoughts on Lion’s full-screen apps: Do you feel that a full-screen Path Finder window that exists in its own Space would fulfill this request? Please share your ideas in the comments.

                        • Add 'Recently Closed Tabs' (like Firefox)

Or, alternately, the ability to 'undo' an accidental closing of a tab.

                          • Add tools to Compare/select files in Dual Pane to help sync

Now that V5 has Dual Pane mode, we need tools to quickly see what files match, which files have the same name but a different file size or modification date ( etc...), and which files are not in each directory and have the ability to sort them as such.

I would recommend also color coding the files to make it easier to see what group they belong to.

Also being able to exclude the different matching criteria. So if you only want to see the files that are different or ones that have the newest modification date, etc...

                            This will… more

                            • More flexible sidebar/drawers

                              1. The option to be able to add more than 2 shelves per drawer.
                              2. Allow the Drop Stack and Trash to be placed anywhere on the Sidebar or Drawer.
                              3. Ability to 'group' items in a shelf, so similar items can be put under a group heading. (suggestion 1 may solve this).
                              4. Styling for Shelf headers - instead of grey bar, option for Leopard Finder 'Places' style headers.

This will require substantial changes to Path Finder, so we’ll investigate this as a possible feature for Path Finder 6.

                              • Compare modification dates & sizes when overwriting files

Show the changed-dates and sizes for files with the same name.

Give the dialog an option to replace dest. files that are older than the source files.

SVN support is great, but Mercurial and GIT are more up to date VCS systems with bright future. Some basic level of support would be usefull

                                  • Add dual-pane mirroring, swapping, and keyboard shortcuts

                                    1. Copy source pane path to destination pane path: click a button (or use a keyboard shortcut) on one pane to update the path on the other path to be the same.

                                    2. Switch source and destination pane paths: click a button (or use a keyboard shortcut) to make the path on the left and right panes switch.

                                    3. Switch focus between left and right panes using the keyboard, e.g. Tab key - this is crucial! Apologies if it is actually there and I've missed it.

3 1/2 - Open new file browser in dual pane view by default -… more

                                    • Add mountable SSH support

It would be sweet if it was possible to connect to another computer with SSH using pathfinder. Some google guys made an app that makes this possible with finder perhaps you could incorperate their application in yours. The programs name is mac fusion and it uses another program called sshfs to work.

We may end up adding better support for ExpanDrive since we’re able to work with the developers directly. Both ExpanDrive and MacFUSE do currently work with Path Finder, there just isn’t an interface to access them from within Path Finder.

                                      • TrueCrypt Support

Support the open sourced TrueCrypt disk encrytion natively within Pathfinder so that encrypted volumes can be created and mounted without having to run TrueCrypt in addition to Pathfinder.

When looking through a set of photos with preview, I can delete a photo. However, this leaves no file selected. If PF would select the next file, I could continue scanning through the photos...

                                          • Show if a folder is a shared folder

The finder displays a "SHARED" info at the top of a folder if this folder is a shared folder. You can share a folder in system preferences and sometimes I forget to disable this sharing. So I find it quite useful to see this information.
