I'm sure this is a highly contentious issue, but I'm a bit disappointed with the new Pathfinder 6 icon. Sure, it's different. I'm not going to critique it from a visual design standpoint -- I'm sure lots of blood and sweat went into it's design. I'm approaching this from a UX/usability standpoint. The critique I have is that it throws out years and years of built up icon recognition "muscle memory" from the previous application icons. I think it would be one thing to use an "updated" app icon (that used elements from the previous one), but the only remnants of the classic icon in the new one are the black and white compass ticks that encircle the new icon. From a visual standpoint, the new icon is confusing to existing users because of the abundance of white. I was going to use the iTunes icon as an example of "imagine if the icon changed suddenly," but Apple did that already. So, maybe a preference, or a hidden preference that we can "defaults write com.cocoatech.Pathfinder.classicIconEnabled -bool true" to bring back the old one would be highly appreciated. I've been a PF customer for years and years (first used it on a clamshell G3 iBook), and have faithfully paid for upgrades. This is the first time I've had my doubts. Cocoatech has always paid attention to usability, but I think this is something worth reconsidering.

1. The option to be able to add more than 2 shelves per drawer. 2. Allow the Drop Stack and Trash to be placed anywhere on the Sidebar or Drawer. 3. Ability to 'group' items in a shelf, so similar items can be put under a group heading. (suggestion 1 may solve this). 4. Styling for Shelf headers - instead of grey bar, option for Leopard Finder 'Places' style headers.

When you copy/upload a file,make possible to show progress bar in the bottom pane or in the bottom drawer. it could be great to have a constant view, because sometimes it's hidden between the windows.

Queued files copies displayed in one window [updated]

When you launch 2 big files copies (File Copy A, then File copy B), the finder and pathfinder do both file copies at the same time. This is utterly inefficient as the HD head constantly move from file A to File B back and forth to copy a bit of A, then a bit of B. A much more efficient way is to queue the file copy, so the computer copies A, then B at full speed because HD Head moves a lot less. Connectix's disckcopy did that in Mac OS 9 days. It's even worse with copies from network and CD/DVD copies. Somme refinements : ability to pause and reorder the queue or relaunched a paused copy. Automatic reordering of the queue to start to do the small copies first to maximize the number of user demands in the minimum time. That feature would justify Pathfinder use by itself

Right now, you can drag and drop an arbitrary application icon to the toolbar and launch it. You can also drag and drop a file/folder and have it open by that program. However, this is not ideal. Not only do I have to hit the back button and grab the current folder, if that is what I want to launch with the program, but I also have to battle the toolbar's tendency to think I'm adding a toolbar link to my file/folder instead of wanting to drop it on the application icon. Similar to the "Accept dropped items" contextual menu item for these icons, I would like to have, say, a "Launch w/Current Folder" option (turned off by default).

I can add toolbar icons for applications I use a lot to the Finder toolbar. Then I can drag and drop items to that icon to launch the application with the file loaded. I'd like to do the same in Path Finder. Thanks.

I have 5 or 6 tabs that I like to keep open to folders I use regularly. PF remembers them when I close it, but I'd like to have PF allow me to protect me from myself--that is, lock those folders so I can't navigate away from them when I'm using it. There may be other solutions but options that spring to mind for me are that if you try to navigate to a different folder in a locked tab: a new tab opens; an error message appears; you are taken to a tab that contains that folder; if you double click a subfolder it would not open as the new top level folder in that tab, but just go to it as if you single clicked.

The current bluish gradient just doesn't look right when in context with the rest of the app (which is grayish)... please give us the option to make it grey, with blue only in dual pane mode (to see which pane has focus), and let us set the gradient color. Unfortunately, this doesn't work in path finder and there is nothing similar. Now imagine you are working together with a colleague, and your private stuff shows up in the search results. Being right-handed, I like to move items from folders on the right side of the screen to folders on the left. Occasionally when I set up PathFinder sources for split-view I bungle this. Allowing a "swap view" [or something like it] could save loads of time, without having to rebrowse within both panes to fix it manually.

I use Default Folder, which has very nice feature - you can easily access all opened windows in Finder in open/save dialogs via menu. I use also Path Finder as a complete replacement for Finder, and the main problem is, that in this Default Folder's menu, there is only listed the currently active tab in Path Finder. So even if you have opened 10 different tabs in Path Finder, windows menu in open/save dialog with Default Folder allows you navigate only to the active tab. I am not programmer, but I think the problem would be solved if Path Finder would present for other programs each tab as single window (communication between PathFinder and Default Folder apparently works now, because Default Folder already see active tab as Finder window, so it only needs to get the info about non-active tabs as well). But of course any other way to make this work is fine ;)

PF shows the current path in the path navigator with each segment as buttons so you can jump to a directory in the path. What I'd like to see is more of a "URL bar". Basically allowing a "Go to folder" feature. I like how Vista's Explorer has implemented this: it shows the buttons like PF does, but if you click on an special icon the bar turns into a text-field where you can type the path specifically.

Currently in PathFinder, if I am browsing a directory of images and delete one, PathFinder "moves out of" the directory where the deletion occurred. It would make more sense to select the file immediately after the deleted one, so that a person could delete several photos (or other files) one after another, without continually having to rescroll to where the deleted file resided, and manually select the next file. I can see no real downside to having this behavior implemented.

Scenario: I'm looking through my screenshots folder deciding which images I don't want anymore. There are 11,387 files in this folder. Since they're screengrabs they all have similar names like 2010-02-26 at Feb 26 2.21.21 PM.png or screenshot 7777.png When I delete a file I kind of lose my place in the list because nothing else gets highlighted. Due to my decades of Windows usage my instince is to just press up or down arrow keys to select one of the files closest to the one I just deleted and continue my browsing. BUT, when i do that on a mac (finder or path finder) it select the first or list file in the list. Making me totally lose my place

When an app asks me for a file or a folder (file-dialogs), I am often tempted to drag a piece of the path bar into that dialog. Because (naturally), the folder I like to select in the app, is also open in path finder, since I am working there. so I think this scenario happens frequently. Now, folders can only be dragged from the main pane, so I need to jump up one folder above the one I want to drag, to get it shown there. Dragging the last portion of the path bar would always work. And it would be nice to be able to drag the other pieces (parent folders) of the path as well.

Multiple HDD's cannot be rearranged in sidebar of PF. Instead they are organized alphabetically. Would like the freedom to place them in hierarchy as User wishes.

In list view, multiple files are currently selected by drawing a rectangle. Unfortunately, you have to draw over text in order to really select something. Since there can be a lot of empty space between the columns (e. g. if a file name is very short), this often means you have to move the mouse horizontally in order to select a row/file although you're already pointing on its entry. The Finder makes the task much easier by not using a rectangle at all but simply selecting the row under the cursor if the mouse button is currently depressed. Clicking and holding the mouse button in a row's empty space and dragging onto the next row selects both rows (instead of drawing a useless rectangle as Path Finder does).

Wish Git status (of PF6) focus on the current directory.

But, git status shows the status of the entire repository, not focussing on the current directory, which lose the tight correlation between the current folder and git status results. It seems PF6 run 'git status'. I'd prefer 'git status .' (note the dot (meaning current directory)). Or, at least some configuration option for that.. Thanks!
